Norway House Indian Hospital official transition of health services to the Kinosew Sipi Nanatawiwekamik Health Centre of Excellence

We are pleased to share an important update with the community. Beginning September 26, 2025, the health services from the Norway House Indian Hospital will move to the New Kinosew Sipi Nanatwawiwekamik Health Centre of Excellence.

Why this move?

The Norway House Indian Hospital has served us for over 70 years, However, the building is now outdated and no longer safe or suitable for the kind of care our people deserve. The new Health Centre of Excellence will provide a safe, modern space for care, better support for recruiting and keeping skilled doctors and nurses, Improved access to quality health services for all members of our nation.

Transition Plans

Ongomiizwin Health Services (OHS) is responsible for doctor services, including recruitment and scheduling, to make sure care continues without interruption.

Hospital leadership, Vince Henderson will continue to support health services during the transition.

OHS Medical Director Dr. Ian Whetter has stepped in as interim Chief of Staff following Doctor Leary’s resignation. He and his team will continue to oversee doctor coverage, on call services, and specialists’ rotations until a new Chief of Staff is hired.

Staffing and Scheduling

Starting in October, you can expect a full complement of doctors, continued rotation of specialists, including: OBS/gyn, echocardiology, rheumatology, pediatrics, and mental health services.

We anticipate that OHS and the new Chief of Staff will provide regular updates on physician services and if there are any changes in services.

Chief and Council will continue to work hard to advocate for better health services and to make sure care is respectful, reliable, and responsive.

We hosted a recruitment event for new graduates of midwifery, providing an excellent opportunity to connect with this year’s promising graduates. It was inspiring to meet them, and we’re excited about the potential of hosting some of them in the future. The event also helped raise the profile of our Health Centre for future employment opportunities and allowed us to network with other health provider recruiters.

In the Spirit of Health and Well-being, it is with great pride and a deep sense of accomplishment that my Council and I on behalf of the people of Norway House Cree Nation, welcome you to the grand opening of the Kinosew Sipi Nanatawiwekamik Health Centre of Excellence. This moment marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to achieve equitable healthcare for all members of our community and for Northern Manitoban’s.

Healthcare and Wellness has always been a priority for us, and the establishment of the Health Centre of Excellence (HCE) is a reflection of our commitment to addressing the needs of our people. Over the past ten years, countless individuals have dedicated their time, energy, and expertise to make this vision a reality. We acknowledge and deeply appreciate their hard work and unwavering dedication.

This state-of-the-art facility, the largest Health Centre project undertaken by Indigenous Services Canada in partnership with a First Nation community, is not just a building. It is a symbol of hope, a hub of innovation, and a mark of the resilience and strength of Norway House Cree Nation and the Ininiwak people.

Situated on the Treaty Five lands of NHCN, this one-of-a-kind Indigenous Health Care Centre is designed to address our community’s unique needs. With expanded Renal Dialysis delivery and the future addition of a surgical suite, we are bringing advanced healthcare services closer to home, ensuring that our community has access to the highest standards of care.

Our heartfelt gratitude extends to everyone who contributed to making this vision a reality, from our dedicated team of leaders and professionals to our partners and supporters. Your collaboration and commitment have been instrumental in achieving this dream. The dream of a place where healing and well-being are accessible to all, right here in the North.

Warmest greetings and thanks to all the members of Norway House Cree Nation for this momentous occasion. The 51st annual Treaty and York Boat Days is a fitting occasion to celebrate the official grand opening of the Nanatawiewkamik, which aptly means Place of Healing.

My heartfelt congratulations are with your community as you open the doors and share with the people of Norway House Cree Nation this wonderful, state-of-the-art health centre.

This project has been a long time coming, and I am confident that together we will make the Kinosew Sipi Nanatawiwekamik Health Centre of Excellence a hub of health in the community that everyone can be proud of.

Thanks to the dedication of the First Nation leaders who made this centre possible, and to the health care workers who serve its community. Together, you’ve turned this health centre into more than just a building but a place of healing, compassion, and care.
